Sanjay Manjrekar’s Blunt Criticism of Gautam Gambhir Draws Sharp Social Media Reactions
Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar faced backlash on social media following his pointed criticism of India head coach Gautam Gambhir. Manjrekar remarked that Gambhir “does not have the right demeanour” to handle media interactions, suggesting that he should focus on behind-the-scenes work instead. His comment came shortly after Gambhir’s pre-series press conference in Mumbai, held ahead of India’s departure for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia.
During his first media appearance since India’s 0-3 whitewash at home against New Zealand, Gambhir addressed questions confidently, even responding with a few lighthearted remarks. However, Manjrekar was unimpressed with Gambhir’s “demeanour,” expressing his views in an X post: “Just watched Gambhir in the press conference. Maybe wise for the BCCI to keep him away from such duties, let him work behind the scenes. He does not have the right demeanour nor the words when interacting with them. Rohit & Agarkar, much better guys to front up for the media.”
In response, social media users reminded Manjrekar of India captain Rohit Sharma’s comment, “12 saal mein ek baar toh allowed hai” (“Once in 12 years should be allowed”), which came following India’s first home Test defeat in 12 years earlier this month.
