Who is Susie Wiles? Meet Donald Trump’s Historic Choice for First Woman White House Chief of Staff
President-elect Donald Trump has appointed his campaign manager, Susie Wiles, as White House chief of staff, marking a historic milestone as she becomes the first woman to hold this role. “Susie is tough, smart, innovative, and is universally admired and respected,” Trump said in a statement, expressing confidence in her ability to help shape his new administration.
“This is a well-deserved honor to have Susie as the first-ever female Chief of Staff in U.S. history,” he added. Her appointment marks the first of many expected staffing announcements as Trump prepares to return to the White House on January 20. Wiles’ selection is seen as a significant step, reflecting Trump’s readiness to form the team that will lead his administration.
Who is Susie Wiles?
Wiles, widely respected both within Trump’s circle and beyond, led one of his most disciplined campaigns to date, securing her place as a top choice for the chief of staff position. A seasoned Republican strategist from Florida, she managed Trump’s state campaigns in 2016 and 2020 and led Governor Ron DeSantis’ successful 2018 campaign. Previously, she ran Rick Scott’s 2010 gubernatorial campaign and briefly managed former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman’s 2012 presidential bid.
Daughter of legendary NFL broadcaster Pat Summerall, Wiles entered politics in 1980 during Ronald Reagan’s presidential campaign. Author Chris Whipple, who studies the role of White House chiefs of staff, said, “She’s shown that she can manage Trump, that she works with him and can sometimes tell him hard truths.” However, he noted that her lack of recent Washington experience might be a challenge.
Known for her rapport with Trump and his family, Wiles has also built alliances with prominent figures like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Elon Musk. Trump aides say she’s adept at balancing Trump’s moods and impulses without limiting him, making her a key figure in his team.
Role of the Chief of Staff
The White House chief of staff serves as the president’s close advisor, gatekeeper, and enforcer of the administration’s agenda. An effective chief of staff, Whipple explains, “is absolutely critical to an effective White House,” often tasked with telling the president what he doesn’t want to hear. This role is especially vital for managing the flow of information and guiding policy decisions, a responsibility Wiles will now assume in the White House.
