Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2024: Why is it Celebrated?

Dev Uthani Ekadashi, also known as Prabodhini Ekadashi or Devutthana Ekadashi, is a significant day for devotees of Lord Vishnu. This day marks the awakening of Lord Vishnu after his four-month-long slumber during the Chaturmas period. For those following the Vaishnava tradition, Dev Uthani Ekadashi carries deep religious and spiritual meaning.

It is believed that during the monsoon season, Lord Vishnu went into a divine rest for four months. On Dev Uthani Ekadashi, he awakens to bless his devotees, symbolizing spiritual awakening and renewal. The day is observed with devotion, with devotees fasting, performing rituals, and offering prayers to seek prosperity, happiness, and divine grace from Lord Vishnu.

In 2024, Dev Uthani Ekadashi is observed on November 12. According to Drik Panchang, the Ekadashi Tithi began at 6:46 PM on November 11 and will end at 4:04 PM on November 12.

Devotees traditionally fast from sunset the day before Ekadashi and continue until the morning of the following day. The Parana (fast-breaking) timings are also crucial, as the first quarter of the Dwadashi Tithi, known as Hari Vasara, is considered inauspicious for breaking the fast. It is recommended to wait until Hari Vasara ends to perform Parana.
